Smooth Subdivision rounds your geometry by adding more polygons. Linear Subdivision is executed before Smooth subdivision and is used to emphasize edges.
Tested with R19, R18, R17, R16 (in R17 and R16 linear subdivision is not available, use curved subdivision instead)
if you had installed the beta version, make sure to delete it and also symbolcache file from prefs folder
